Learn More About French Doors

French doors are elegant and charming and have a certain class.

Many homeowners prefer to place them in the back of their house. They create a wide walkway that leads out to the garden, bringing the outside in.

However, French doors are not the same as patio doors.

What's differnt between French and patio doors

Patio doors were originally a term that only applied to sliding doors opening into the patio or garden. The term patio doors have evolved to include all types of doors leading to the garden. Sometimes, this can include French doors.

French doors were traditionally two doors that are identical and open outwards. This creates a wide path into the garden. This is great news if you have small gardens or homes as it increases the sense of space.

Patio doors that slide are not able to be moved through the entire space. One side will never open.

Many types of French doors

Let’s now look at how they work.

External (French Patio Doors)

French doors that open outwards lead to the outside, usually into the garden. These doors open normally outwards, but some can be opened inwards. These doors feature large glass panels that let natural light in to brighten your home.

Internal

French doors inside the interior look very similar to exterior French doors. Two doors, mostly made of glass, open up to create more living space.

Double French doors can be installed between two rooms of your home to create more space. They will allow for more light and create a stylish separation between the two rooms.

Slide

The sliding French doors are a timeless design with a lot of charm. The doors open in a sliding fashion, rather than swinging open. Instead of opening up, they slide apart and allow for ample space to pass through to the garden. Fixed panes of glass on either side of the sliding doors allow for the doors to overlap when opened.

You might be wondering how this differs from a sliding patio door. Sliding patio doors have two sides. One side is fixed, the other can slide parallel to it. This creates an opening that opens to the outside. You can only pass through half the space these doors take up, so they are often used as an additional doorway into and out of your home.

Are French doors secure?

By their very nature, French doors are meant to be open and welcoming. This might make you think they’re not the most secure. But that’s not the case. As long as they’ve been installed correctly then French doors can be as secure as any other door that leads into the home.

To help make your new doors as secure as possible, you can take some extra measures:

  • Install double glazing rather than single
  • Cover the handles with security bars at night or when you’re not home
  • Have laminated glass fitted which adds extra protection

Cost of a French Door

Prices for French doors vary depending on their size, materials, and whether or not they are double-glazed.

These prices are only estimates and do not include installation costs. The cost of installation will vary depending upon who does the work. To increase your chances of getting the best deal, we recommend that you get at least three quotes from different installers.

Are they right for your property?

French doors are elegant and add class to the exterior. They also bring lots of natural light inside, which gives you plenty of space to move around.

They are not the most secure door, but they are more secure than ever. They come standard with locks, but extra precautions like double glazing can be taken.

French doors are worth looking into if you have the space to install them. It’s more work if a wall needs to be made. If you are willing to live with some disruption, you will reap the benefits in the end.

Some things may have a certain classical quality to them, but the charm, elegance, and style of French doors are there for all to see.

What about installation?

French doors can be fitted if the space is already available. If the wall needs to be built, you’ll have more disruption.

Interior and exterior French doors can be fitted almost in the same manner. Before the doors can fit, the frame must be removed. All measurements must be taken to ensure that the space is even. Once it is ready, the doors can be installed.

Exterior doors require extra security measures. It is important to seal all openings to prevent drafts.

You all know that Australia’s weather can be windy. Doors should have opening restrictors to prevent doors from blowing open. They can be fitted easily if they aren’t installed during installation.
